Help us raise funds for MS research

If you’ve met Jon and Lisa, you know that they are passionate timber engineers and educators, colleagues and friends. If you know them a little better, you might also know that they’re passionate about mountain biking, trail running, and really all things outdoors.

What you probably didn’t know is that Lisa has been living with Multiple Sclerosis for over 13 years. Lisa doesn’t tend to make a big deal of it, because generally, things were ‘fine’... until they weren’t.

In early 2022, Jon got a phone got call from Lisa, that went like this:

“Jon, things are bad.”

“Why, what’s up.”

“I’ve had a massive flare up and my legs are like jelly. I’m gonna go on meds to slow down disease progression, but the side effects are terrifying, and the wheelchair clock is ticking."

"Oh no, that's no good. What can I do to help?"

"I guess, once I recover from this episode I better start training for that ultra marathon, make use of those legs while I can! What do you reckon?”

And that’s when Jon came up with the idea to run the Cape to Cape great walk in WA, 123 km in September 2023, and raise funds for MS research. MS is the most common disease of the central nervous system - currently there is no cure. The treatments with the highest efficacy also have the scariest side effects (like ‘risk of death’), and while disease progression is often gradual, it leads to permanent disabilities.

Lisa thinks there’s no better way to ‘stick it to MS’, than to go for a really long run together with a friend and raise money to research better treatments (or even a prevention / cure). You can support this with a secure online donation, or by organising your own fun-run-fundraiser at your workplace. MS Australia is a registered charity and donations are tax deductible.

Thank you for your support!

We did it!

Friday 29th Sep
After 33 hours and 22 minutes we crossed the finish line on Wednesday. What an adventure!! 132km along the coastline, stunning views, rocks, cliffs, forests, and soooo much sand! Lots of laughter, stories and singing along the way. We couldn’t have done it without our amazing support crew who kept us watered and fed. Thank you to everyone who’s donated to our fundraiser. We’re keeping it open for a few more weeks in case you’d like to share with others. We’ll do a proper write up in the near future. Stay tuned.

Meet Scott!

Saturday 26th Aug
Hi I'm Scott, I love running through fantastic places around Australia. Can't wait to support Lisa with this incredible journey.

Meet Melanie!

Tuesday 30th May
Our team of runners has grown. Here's what Mel has to say:

"I’ve had the fortune of racing and pacing many marathons and ultras in NZ and around the world so when Lisa invited me on her epic Cape to Cape adventure there was no doubt in my mind that I’d make it happen one way or another. Running to me is about the journey and the people you meet along the way. Lisa, you are an inspiration!"

Brisbane Valley Rail Trail - 50km

Thursday 20th Apr
On the weekend I clocked my third ultra distance since starting this journey with Jon. I had organised a few cheeky "slightly" ultra fun runs in Aotearoa NZ (anything beyond 42.195km is technically an ultra), but I only really started running again in August last year. Being able to run 58km on the Conondale Great Walk last December is something I don't take for granted.

I also supported another Brisbane runner in his mission to run for 20h23min on New Year's Eve raising money for Lifeline (I ended up keeping him company for almost 9 hours right up until midnight!). I thought I'd go out for a couple of hours, but by the time we'd finished I'd run almost 49 kilometres!

Fundraising for a good cause has always been something that's driven my sporting ambitions. I raised money with my first marathon for a family friend who was in poor health which had also impacted her financially. Then I raised money for cancer research biking and running up Alpe d'Huez a few times. And last year I biked Brissie to Bay raising money for MS Queensland. So turning my bucket list run into a fundraiser only made sense.

Coming back to last Saturday's adventure. I picked the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail since it is easy for crewing (aka my partner driving the car with the snacks from town to town). I was hoping to do 8 - 10 hours, and my overall time was indeed 7h55min, so I'll count that as mission accomplished. I may have stopped a few times to eat snacks and take photos explaining the discrepancy between elapsed time and moving time. My partner was laughing when he went through my camera roll. "So you're running a 50km ultra marathon, when it's 30 degrees out, and you still stop to take photos of timber bridges."

Well... what can I say. I love a good piece of timber engineering!

A heartfelt thanks to everyone who's already donated since we launched the campaign this morning. You're awesome!
