Bek's MS Fundraising

By Rebecca Thorpe

Thank you for supporting my fundraising efforts as I Do It For MS!

I am a long term Community Fundraiser & Volunteer for Multiple Sclerosis, something which has been a part of my life in many forms for a very long time and something that is extremely close to my heart.

In 2012 I lost my beautiful Mum (Jude) to this very cruel disease at the young age of just 59 years old after a very long hard battle with MS over a period of around 16 years.  I also lost a very special friend of mine in Qld a few years prior  who was the same age as me (Im only 38), she was in her early thirties with two young boys and had her whole life ahead of her.  I also have some amazingly inspiring friends who still suffer and fight this disease every day.  I will continue to try to raise awareness and funds in honor & memory of my very special Mum and everyone else who has had to suffer at the hands of this disease and those who still do so. xox

A FEW MS STATS

MS is a condition of the central nervous system, interfering with nerve impulses within the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.  It is a characterised by sclerosis (a Greek word meaning scars).  These scars occur within the central nervous system and depending on where they develop, manifest into various symptoms and disabilities;
MS affects more than 25,000 Australians and 2.5 million people worldwide and is increasing by 4% every year. TASMANIA has Australia's highest prevalence of MS: 75 out of every 100 000 people are affected;
Three out of every 4 people diagnosed are women and most people find out they have MS between the ages of 20 and 40.

Since its identification MS has been the subject of intense, world-wide research & medical treatments have come a very long way, but we still have a long way to go, and unfortunately its cause and cure remain elusive.
