Living life through walking

Please help me to be Limitless For MS!

My mother died of MS at the young age of 26 after battling it for five years, leaving three young children without a mother. My main memory of her was in a wheelchair. I now value every year being able to enjoy an active life without the restrictions that imprisoned my mother. I am so grateful to have full use of my limbs and other senses and MS is not hereditary. I have always tried to be active from horse riding to dog sledding and now, as I near 60, I am taking up hiking the great walks of the world. I have my first major walk booked in December to do the Machu Picchu trail in Peru. I have wanted to do this for 20+ years and now the trip is booked.

I have decided as part of getting fit to do this trail, I have set myself a personal challenge to do this and other walks, I will use this opportunity to fundraise for MS for my mother, and others with MS, that cannot do these hikes because of the disease. Your generous donation will ensure that they are well supported while they face the challenge of living with multiple sclerosis! You can sponsor me and follow my journey through this fundraising page as I keep you updated with my fitness programme leading up to the hike.

MS is the most common disease of the central nervous system - even after 53 years, there is still no cure.

It's quite staggering to think that multiple sclerosis affects more young people than any other neurological condition, with the average age of diagnosis just 30 years old. Every case of multiple sclerosis is unique - the symptoms, severity and progress of the disease are different for everyone.

You can ensure Aussies living with multiple sclerosis can break down barriers, achieve goals and live well by making a secure online donation to help people with MS and the research needed to find a cure.

Thank you for your support.

Looking after your feet

Sunday 18th Aug
Your feet are your best friends when hiking. They are the ones pounding the track and adjusting to each footfall on uneven terrain. So it pays to look after them. After each big training walk, I give my feet a foot spa soak and massage with some Epsom salts.

18th August - gentle 6 km walk to loosen up.

Sunday 18th Aug
Today was a mild 6 km walk with Cree and Cheyenne mainly to get my body used to walking multiple days but not pushing myself to avoid injury.  This was of course after a 6.3 km fast pace dog sledding scoot with Rojo and Ruzek in the early morning.

17th August - Training gets serious

Saturday 17th Aug
I have been trainig for the past three months, generally fitting in a weekend hike from 6 -17 kms with mostly around the 10-14 km mark. I wanted to push myself today to hit the 20 km mark. I did it with a bit to spare carrying 5 kgs (did get lighter as I drank the water 😁). I had sore calves at start from mid-week stairs session but thought to loosen them up with a light hike that turned into a personal challenge 😃. Longest hike ever done for my dogs Ruzek and Rojo but broke the distance set by my English pointers back in 2017 of 22 km in 5 hours. With these distances I take it slower with some breaks, especially for the dogs as it was hot by the end. I let the dogs choose their route at every junction. We nearly ran into a goanna, much to Ruzek's excitement. Thankfully I saw it 2 metres before we would have been on top of it. It was a big one. Saw some lovely lichen also down by the creek, everything looking good and settling down after the rain. A few hikers and mtb'ers were on the trail, all very friendly. I also had a great chat with the crew servicing the trails to make them better for us. Really appreciate their work.
