MEET Sophie Drummond
OCTOBER 2025
In May 2025, I had the absolute privilege of walking the Camino de Santiago with 17 fundraisers for MS Plus! We walked 120km through the Spanish countryside in 5 days which was both gruelling and incredibly special.
The Camino de Santiago is an ancient pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and pilgrims often use the journey to reflect and make big life decisions. I didn’t have a specific decision to ponder but walking to raise money for MS Plus had me thinking a lot about my own journey with MS.
In early 2025, I had my first relapse since being diagnosed in 2020, which came as a huge shock to me, my family and my healthcare team. I spent weeks in and out of hospital, experiencing weakness in my arm, optic neuritis and sensory changes in my right leg. There were moments where I didn’t think I would be able to get on the plane let alone walk 120km.
Thankfully, due to the incredible support of my healthcare team and MS Plus I recovered from my relapse and got back to where I had been prior to my relapse. Living with multiple sclerosis is like constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. You can be fit and healthy one day and in hospital the next. I do not take any days I can get out of bed and go for a walk for granted, but getting to walk the Camino de Santiago was especially impactful.
Walking into Santiago de Compestela on the final day of our pilgrimage was so special. After walking with the group for 5 days we got very close and shared some incredible memories together. Not only that, but as a group we have raised over $106,000 for MS Plus which feels even more important after the year I have had.
If you are thinking about taking part in a fundraising walk with MS Plus, I highly recommend it. There is nothing like travelling with like-minded people, raising money for an important cause and spending days walking for a purpose.
We look forward to bringing you more great Do It For MS fundraiser stories soon.
