The Long Road to Me for MS

By Tracey Ukosich

Please help me to be Limitless For MS!

I've set myself a personal challenge which am using to fundraise for MS. You can sponsor me and follow my journey through this fundraising page. Your generous donation will ensure that Aussies are well supported while they face the challenge of living with multiple sclerosis!

MS is the most common disease of the central nervous system - currently there is no cure.

It's quite staggering to think that multiple sclerosis affects more young people than any other neurological condition, with the average age of diagnosis just 30 years old. Every case of multiple sclerosis is unique - the symptoms, severity and progress of the disease are different for everyone.

You can ensure Aussies living with multiple sclerosis can break down barriers, achieve goals and live well by making a secure online donation.

Thank you for your support.

My Updates

A massive thank you

Monday 19th Apr
I’d like to say a massive thank you to all who have donated and supported my fundraising endeavour. I am humbled.

Riding the Nullarbor was one of the most gruelling rides I’ve undertaken to date. Bringing my best to sustain endurance  in challenging conditions, such as heat and winds, as well as the mental and physical challenge to stay safe amongst road trains and traffic, was at times testing.

The magnitude of what we had undertaken, me as a rider, and Dee as a support vehicle driver, is something, I feel, may be difficult to be understood unless you had actually travelled this road before.  I am supremely grateful to Dee, who did her best in trying conditions, to help keep me safe, nourished and hydrated each day of the ride.
I believed from the beginning, that if I could succeed in completing this challenge, that in my own way, I could fight back against MS., that I could bring further awareness to MS , and to raise much needed funds to support those who need it, who are faced with this debilitating disease.

I once feared telling people about me having  MS. I didn’t want people to feel sorry for me, or discriminate against me.  There is no shame in having MS.  Some of us can lead a relatively full life with varied afflictions, and some of us need more support,,assistance, understanding and medical interventions.

There is no cure at this stage for MS,  however, research continues , and medications continue to improve to help slow the disease as time goes on.

For me personally, what I find empowering, is the belief that I can continue to be strong, powerful and unstoppable for as long as my body allows me to be, in whichever capacity.

I want you to know how empowering your words of support were to me during this journey.  There were days where they really helped me to get this task done.   In this effect, we were all part of one big team.

Thank you.  The tally has continued to grow, and the ride has moved from the Nullarbor to rail trails around Australia. You can continue to follow me on Facebook or Instagram, on The Long Road To Me , to see where my journey takes me next.

Kindest regards

Tracey Ukosich

The last day on the Nullarbor

Thursday 15th Apr

Day 19 on the Nullarbor...the final day!

Road trains counted: in excess of 113.

Km cycled: approx 95km

Total cycled to date: 1979

$$ raised for MS: $20,065

Hello Norseman! We’re here.

The alarm was set for 6am, but like every other morning, we woke before the alarm, and set about packing up and getting ready, we knew I had to put in another big day of cycling to make it to Norseman.

The head winds weren’t as bad as yesterday, but the hills were even more challenging.

Being a Wednesday, it was yet another busy day for road trains, and the verges sloped downhill.  Tricky.

Dee stuck closer today, being a busy day on the road.

I plugged away, hill after hill, determined to get to the end. When I finally spied the Welcome to Norseman sign, I rang Dee to come for a photo opportunity. We’d made it. I can’t describe the feeling.

I have been humbled by people’s generosity and kindness. I have been surprised at my own strength and stamina.

I have been blessed to have made such a kindred spirit in Dee, and to have had the pleasure of her company, her wisdom, her hilarity, and dare I say her propensity to break out in advertising ditties and songs that either make me laugh or shake my head whilst smiling.

I have been amazed at what my body has been able to bring, at times when it was under duress.

In the words of a long time mate Dave, who we lost to brain cancer last year...Never Bow Down.  I imagined him telling me this at times during the ride.

Thank you to all the people who sent messages of support. They really did help get me through.

Thank you to everyone who donated, no matter the amount, every dollar helps this worthy cause.

I’m grateful everyday, that even though I have this disease, I am still able to give back, to keep living life as best as I can. For as long as I can....I will.

With love and thanks

Tracey xx

The final days

Tuesday 13th Apr
With the long stretch completed, and making it to Balladonia, we rested when the remnants of a cyclone caused rain and high winds yesterday. This morning as I type at 5:30am, I will start to get ready soon so that I am ready by daybreak to head off towards Norseman,  The final town, the end of the long road, the Nullarbor.

I figure that it will take between 2 to 3 days, depending on weather, but at this stage it’s looking favourable.  The cyclone has caused a lot of damage up in the north around Kalbarri.

I am consumed by a range of emotions right now, and they’re hard to explain. It’s been a long journey, but once I’ve completed the Nullarbor, the journey, the long road to me continues, as I seek out other trails around Australia. Trails that are not on roads. Trails that do not have road trains barrelling through, trails with much safer and secure elements.

Nearing the end means that I must not be complacent, but vigilant as ever. It’s my birthday on the 14th of April, tomorrow. It would be amazing to complete the journey on this day, but not vital. Please, if you would like to send me a birthday message on this forum, and you haven’t already donated, whether it be $2, $5 or more, the greatest gift would be to donate to this cause, which means so much to me, so close to my heart, please send me a birthday message on here, encourage me to bring it home, and help me do it for MS.

Xx Tracey

The 90 Mile Straight

Saturday 10th Apr
It’s been a hectic day, as I’ve begun to cycle the 90 Mile Straight section of the Nullarbor. Today I cycled 72km, with Dee following close behind. She was taking extra precautions as it has been super busy, traffic wise today. I counted 147 road trains, and many more have passed since we’ve stopped to camp for the night.  I could have cycled much further, but sometimes we need to consider campsite availability, daylight that is left, and where to expend energy.

We stopped to look at the Caiguna blowhole, which was interesting. You could hear the wind whistling out of the hole, and see debris flittering around the base of the hole. It was more interesting than I thought on first inspection.

Tomorrow we are hoping  for a great deal less Roadtrains. It’s exhausting stopping, getting off and pushing on again, but it really is the safest option.

Made it to Madura

Wednesday 7th Apr
I have attempted to update this blog a couple of times unsuccessfully with little or poor reception. So here I go again.
Since Yelata, I have cycled to the Bluffs, met and ridden with some cyclists who were bike packing. Enjoyed accommodation along the way, and endured searing temperatures, and plague proportions of flies. The type that bite, and the type that relentlessly follow your face whichever way you turn.
We have met countless wonderful people. Some who stop on the Nullarbor, donate, offer support, and encouragement, it’s completely humbling.

I couldn’t do this without Dee. She has been an amazing support, and her role she has undertaken is mammoth. She takes it seriously, and her concern for my welfare has been amazing.
Thank you all who continue to offer words of encouragement. Many are enjoying my blogs on Facebook ...The Long Road To Me.
Please follow and share this link far and wide. Our target is within reach.  Xx

Yalata preschoolers saying hello

Tuesday 30th Mar

Day 4 on the Nullarbor

Tuesday 30th Mar
After a couple of nights in a cabin in Ceduna (Luxury) I rode out at daybreak towards Penong. It was a 72km ride and I definitely found the road trains daunting. I decided that the smartest thing to do, was stop and roll off to the edges when I spotted one coming. After all, they are working and have time frames to adhere to.

From Penong, the cycling was broken into smaller sections, with accommodation options and opportunities to explore, dictating the cycling for each day.

From Penong, we explored Cactus Beach, and Lake McDonnell, with brilliant hues of pinks and blues set amongst the stark white sand dunes, and surf breaks. From there it was a 45km cycle to the Fowlers Bay Turn off. We stayed at Fowlers Bay, and lost my flag on the drive in. We met some wonderful people, shared stories, and set off early back to the turn off.  From there I cycled 33km to Nundroo. And stayed on a Farmstay in Coorabie. It was fabulous meeting the farmers who owned it, as they explained the changes in the farming population to years past.

Today was amazing. I met some other cyclists who wanted photos with me, as well as some fellow Troopy enthusiasts that I met at Fowlers Bay.

Best of all, was when a bus full of children pulled up from the Yalata preschool, who had asked if they could have their photo taken with me. They were gorgeous.  Being a school teacher, this absolutely made my day.

The other highlight, each and every day, is meeting g up with my support driver Dee. She is super organised, and honestly the ying  to my yang.  I don’t know what I’d do without her. Everyday we laugh and joke around, she is so supportive. Only just under 1000km to go. 😁

Nearly at the start... Ceduna

Thursday 25th Mar
Hello supporters,
In a few hours time, I will be heading to Ceduna to meet my support driver Dee. She is so excited to be joining me and supporting my journey across the Nullarbor.
After cycling many trails and paths around Adelaide and SA, I have tapered off the riding a little. I don’t want to exhaust myself before I begin, but do want to keep those muscles moving.

I have had a friend travelling with me for the past week, and she has also ridden with me a couple of times for part of the trail. Kerry, leaves for home after we meet Dee.

Living out of my Troopy is challenging enough when it’s just me, but even more challenging for two. I love sleeping up the top, I generally sleep well up here. There is another bed made up below, though this involves shuffling a lot of things around every day.  It’s a challenge, but doable... like the entire journey...and the challenge that lies ahead  (The Nullarbor)

I am so grateful to everybody here who have shown their support in many ways.  I definitely am going to need continued words of encouragement along the journey, so please follow my page... The Long Road To Me  (Facebook, or Instagram with underscores between the words) and spur me on along the journey.  We are over the half way mark in terms of my fundraising targets, and I am so humbled. I have reasonable way to go, so please spread the word amongst your friends, families and network to help me help others living with Multiple Sclerosis.   I hope you are enjoying my journey so far.  Over 770km cycled n training to date, over $11,000 raised and only 2 more sleeps until I start cycling that long stretch of road. I’m sure my mental and physical strength is about to be challenged. A sacrifice I’m prepared to make to meet this goal.   Xx Tracey 😁

The Riesling Trail

Thursday 25th Mar

McLaren Vale to Adelaide

Friday 12th Mar
Hello all, whilst I’ve been updating my page on Facebook...The Long Road To Me, I have yet to update this blog.

I’ve spent some time on Kangaroo Island and rested after having a fall and hurting my wrist. It’s feeling way better and ride-ready. Yesterday I went for a quick ride to Willunga, from McLaren Vale, and am about to get ready to ride into Adelaide. I’ve had Vinyl stickers put on my car, advertising my page and my Doi it for MS site. Not long to go now, before I meet with my support driver and I begin to cycle that long stretch of road, The Nullarbor.

I was lucky to be able to finally find a bike in my size, that was similar to the bike I had stolen. It’s a much more comfortable ride for me, though I’m yet to test it out on a 100km ride.

The scenery around South Australia has been spectacular so far, and I often wonder if people have life balance right. As I cycle past some of the best beaches, I hope that people are making the most of what they have at their doorstep. I’ve seen older people on their Zimmer frames, making their way to a bench seat, to eat a piece of fruit and look at the sea. Please make sure you are taking care of yourselves. Take some time out to enjoy a simple pleasure and enjoy some of what this beautiful country has to offer. It’s the simple things.

I’ve met some wonderful people on my journey so far. Their stories intrigue me, and inspire me in so many ways. Stories from refugees trying to escape persecution, to surviving cancer, and some, embracing their beliefs and having a go, no matter the hurdles. That is also my journey. To get out, and have a go, no matter the hurdles. No matter how hard it is at times. One foot in front of the other, or in my case, one pedal after the other, one revolution at a time.  My mantra... a simple flag that I bought from Typo stays with me everyday. Whether I’m facing solitude, fatigue or pain.  It serves as a reminder to me to stay Fierce, Powerful,  and Unstoppable!
Please do me a favour, do something for yourselves today. Something simple. Take some time out with a cuppa, a book, get in your garden, or take a short drive or walk to somewhere near or far, and find beauty to breathe in. It will cleanse your soul.  Xxx

Getting ready

Tuesday 23rd Feb
Hi everyone, thank you so much for your donations. I am stoked to have reached more than 10% of the set target so early In launching this page.

I have a bike that has been donated, and have used funds that have been raised through GoFundMe, after my bikes were stolen, to change some specs for it to be further suitable for me to ride, the big test is tomorrow.
I am extremely grateful to Dee, who has offered to be my support driver for the ride. She has been more than amazing in assisting me in the planning process, and I’m sure we will be a great support to each other along the way.  I’ll be making my way towards meeting Dee in Ceduna, where our journey starts, by the end of the week. I have mapped out many training trails along the way in SA to keep up my preparedness. For now, I have to trade my sketchers for cleats and get used to them. Let’s be clear here, I am not your typical cyclist. I do not wear Lycra apart from my knicks and wearing cleats will be a first for me, though I’m assured they will be better for the ride.  Stay tuned for the next instalment.  Thanks again to all who have donated.  This MS warrior Is inspired on further with every donation.  XxX

New Bike

Wednesday 10th Feb
Hi all, I have my first new mountain bike to ride, after having my three bikes stolen. I’m super keen to get back k. The bike and keep training for the Nullarbor. It doesn’t seem to take long to begin to lose your bike fitness. Today I’m revisiting a trail that was too rough for my original road bikes. I’m yet to buy another road bike. They are not so easy to come by in my size at the moment.  Thank you to all who have donated to this charity solo ride so far.  Let’s do this together for MS.
